Sergey Tokarev, an investor of RefaceAl, talked about the real success of Reface (ex Doublicat), a face replacement app. Recently, the app has crossed the landmark of 5 million downloads on AppStore and GooglePlay. It has reached the tops of AppStore charts. RefaceAl, a Ukrainian app development company, developed this app and launched it on January 13, 2020.

Since its launch, the app is gaining phenomenal popularity all across the world. It is among the topmost downloaded apps on AppStore in several countries. It is a face replacement app that allows its users to replace faces on GIF-images. They can replace their own face with the face of a famous celebrity, politician, actor, or athlete. The app users choose their favorite GIF from a collection of GIF-images in several categories. The app can easily make any person a singer, a politician, or an actor.

How did RefaceAl create Reface?
The development team of RefaceAI operated as NeoCortex when the company was founded back in 2011. The aim of the team was to improve the existing machine learning methods. As the team members gained experienced, they started working on the development of their own face replacement algorithm based on artificial intelligence. Hence, they developed their own technology, RefaceAl, which became the name of the company. Sergey Tokarev, an IT businessman, told the media about the development stages of their face replacement technology, “The way of the company to the face replacement on GIF-images has been long, difficult, and involved several stages.”

The development team took over three years to develop RefaceAI technology. Then, it started working on the development of Reflect, a face replacement app on photos. The Reflect app was launched last year. After the success of this app, the team started developing Reface that works with GIF-animation. Hence, the company launched the app at the beginning of this year. Sergey Tokarev said, “The company is planning to master a new technology of face replacement on videos.”

The reasons behind Reface’s success
The software use in Reface app is truly different from its competitors. RefaceAI used a machine-learning algorithm for face replacement on GIF-images. Most of the face replacement apps use computer-generated imagery (CGI) to replace faces on photos and videos. The CGI technology does not produce realistic results as compared to the Generative Adversarial Nets (GAN) technology used by RefaceAI. The self-learning AI software allows the Reface users to get quality results on GIFs. Moreover, celebrities played a crucial role in the success of the app. Jerry Heil and Olga Polyakova, the Ukrainian singers, used the app in their song videos. It made the app more popular all across the world. The app got huge popularity in Ukraine, Malaysia, the US, the Philippines, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, and Brunei. Sergey Tokarev announced that their app was ranked 17th on AppStore in the Entertainment category in Europe as of July 28. In the US, the rank of the app was 13th on GooglePlay as of the same date. Tokarev promised that they would not stop here. RefaceAI is planning to develop new software that will detect the fake videos created by using face replacement apps. At the moment, Reface is riding way beyond its competitors.
