Steve Barclay, Suella Braverman and Michelle Donelan lashed out at the \u201cslow creep of wokeism\u201d in public bodies.<\/p>\n
Mr Barclay ordered health officials to ditch an NHS training manual that told staff to declare their pronouns to patients.<\/p>\n
The Health Secretary instructed that the materials be withdrawn amid fury over the \u201cideological dogma\u201d spreading through the service.<\/p>\n
The training module, issued by Health Education England, said doctors, nurses and other staff should start conversations with patients by declaring their own pronoun.<\/p>\n
Staff were advised to inform patients of pronouns \u2013 such as he\/him, she\/her or they\/them \u2013 in order to create a \u201csafe space for trans, non-binary, intersex and gender non conforming people\u201d.<\/p>\n
Mr Barclay used his speech to the Tory party conference to announce that trans women will be banned from female wards, under plans to restore \u201ccommon sense\u201d to the NHS.<\/p>\n
READ MORE: <\/strong> Trans women set to be banned from female wards under Health Secretary plans<\/strong><\/p>\n He also announced the return of \u201csex specific\u201d language to the NHS \u2013 after references to women were expunged from advice on the menopause and on diseases such as cervical and ovarian cancer.<\/p>\n Mr Barclay went on to reveal that he has intervened \u201cand stopped the NHS ordering staff to declare their pronouns to each new patient\u201d as part of efforts to restore \u201csimple common sense\u201d to the NHS.<\/p>\n \u201cI know as Conservatives, we know what a woman is,\u201d he said, to applause.<\/p>\n Helen Joyce, director of advocacy for campaign group Sex Matters welcomed the shift.<\/p>\n She said: \u201cDuring the past decade the entire NHS has been captured by the extreme transactivist lobby. They\u2019ve written policies saying that patients\u2019 self-declared \u2018gender identities\u2019 are more important than their actual biological sex \u2013 which is absurd when you\u2019re talking about health care. And they say everyone, both staff and patients, should declare their pronouns, when the reality is it\u2019s obvious what sex almost everyone is at first sight. This ideology needs to be removed from every part of the NHS, for everyone\u2019s sake.\u201d<\/p>\n The training manual was issued by Health Education England, a training and education body which is now being merged with NHS England.<\/p>\n Earlier this year Labour leader Keir Starmer said Labour would back single sex wards, based on biological sex.<\/p>\n It came after he sought to clarify his stance on transgender issues by stating that 99.9 per cent of women \u201cof course haven\u2019t got a penis\u201d having previously vowed to change the law in favour of self-identification.<\/p>\n Don’t miss… <\/strong> We use your sign-up to provide content in ways you’ve consented to and to improve our understanding of you. More info<\/p>\n Mr Barclay called for a \u201crelentless focus on patient outcomes\u201d and prioritisation of frontline resources.<\/p>\n \u201cIt does not mean spending huge sums of taxpayer\u2019s money on diversity consultants or hiring bloated internal diversity and inclusion teams,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n \u201cAnd it does not mean ignoring patient\u2019s voices \u2013 especially women\u2019s voices when it comes to the importance of biological sex in healthcare. If we do not get this right now, the long-term consequences could be very serious for the protection of women and future generations.\u201d<\/p>\n Home Secretary Suella Braverman gave her backing to the plans, telling broadcasters on a visit to Bolton: \u201cTrans women have no place in women\u2019s wards or indeed any safe space relating to biological women.<\/p>\n \u201cAnd the Health Secretary is absolutely right to clarify and make it clear that biological men should not have treatments in the same wards and in the same safe spaces as biological women.<\/p>\n \u201cThis is about protecting women\u2019s dignity, and women\u2019s safety and women\u2019s privacy. And that\u2019s why I\u2019m incredibly supportive and I welcome the announcement today by the Health Secretary.\u201d<\/p>\n But a spokesperson for Stonewall said: \u201cThis is a cynical attempt by the Secretary of State to \u2018look busy\u2019 instead of getting on with the graft of implementing the Women\u2019s Health Strategy, and, besides being unworkable, all it will achieve is to restrict access to healthcare for trans women, by making it humiliating and dangerous.\u201d<\/p>\n Ms Donelan also announced a review into the use of sex and gender questions in scientific research and statistics, including in public bodies, warning the \u201cguiding light\u201d of science is under attack from the \u201cslow creep of wokeism\u201d.<\/p>\n In her speech to the conference the Science, Innovation and Technology Secretary said: \u201cWe are safeguarding scientific research from the denial of biology and the steady creep of political correctness. We are taking a stand before it suffocates Britain\u2019s very identity and our values entirely. This is why we are depoliticising science.\u201d<\/p>\n A Tory London Assembly member was ejected from Ms Braverman\u2019s conference speech at the Manchetser conference, accusing her of making his party look \u201ctransphobic\u201d.<\/p>\n Andrew Boff was escorted from the premises after heckling Ms Braverman.<\/p>\n \u201cOur party has a proud record of standing up for LGBT+ rights and she is destroying it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n![](\"https:\/\/cdn.images.express.co.uk\/img\/dynamic\/139\/590x\/secondary\/4992369.jpg?r=1696357623521\")
