At midday today, Ms Truss will face her second-ever Prime Minister’s Questions (PMQs) before holding a lunch with backbenchers to rally support and meet with the 1922 Committee this evening. It comes after a chaotic start to Ms Truss’s premiership following the death of the Queen, a highly controversial mini-budget, dramatic fall in the pound, a U-turn on a tax cut for top earners, and coups from within her own party. Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng has also been pressured to bring his medium-term economic announcement forward to Halloween after complaints the original date, November 23, was too far away. Many MPs, including some cabinet ministers, are publicly calling for the PM to commit to raising benefits in line with inflation to help the poorest during the cost of living crisis – though Number 10 says she has yet to make a decision. Meanwhile, reports have surfaced of former Transport secretary Grant Shapps coordinating a coup against the Prime Minister by collecting comments from fellow MPs about her performance so far.
