Speaking to BBC News earlier Labour MP for Norwich South Clive Lewis admitted the Tories have been “smashing” Labour at the local elections. He revealed how Labour have failed to keep up with the Tories as a political party and that issues with voter trust, demographics and changing voting behaviours stem back “decades” for the party.

BBC host Jo Coburn asked Clive Lewis if the re-alignment of British politics was “fractured” to the point where Labour cannot win again.

Mr Lewis replied: “Incumbency gives them benefits.

“And that’s going to be a problem for us.”

The Norwich South MP added: “I can’t predict the future but what I can say is there has been a long term trend that has been happening, not just in 2019, not just in 2017, it goes back further than that.”

He stressed: “It’s been happening for decades.”

Mr Lewis then went into the details of how he believes the Conservative Party have gradually gained ground in British politics and how Labour fell behind.

The Labour MP explained: “But ultimately post 2008 the Tory party has been the first in this post-neoliberal consensus period to reorganise itself and capitalise on the changes to demographics and the voting system that we have.”

And in an extraordinary admission, Mr Lewis said: “And they are smashing us basically!”

Naga Munchetty asks ‘what is Labour changing into’

Earlier Shadow Home Secretary Nick Thomas-Symonds was grilled by BBC’s Naga Munchetty over the direction of the Labour party after the disastrous election results.

Ms Munchetty asked:“What is the Labour Party changing into, because that’s what a lot of the voters say they just don’t know. They just don’t know what Labour stands for?”

The Shadow Home Secretary replied: “Labour’s values will never change we fundamentally and always will believe in building a more equal society where every single person in that society is valued for their contribution to it.”

“And what they bring to our society so that will always be Labour’s central values. What we have to do is to re-imagine…”

But Ms Munchetty interjected slamming: “But I genuinely don’t know what that means!”

But in a reflective moment the MP accepted: “We have to ask ourselves why it is that people have not seen Labour as the answer to the problems they face in their everyday lives and the injustices we see.

“What’s happened over the last four defeats in general elections, whether its in Hartlepool other places as well.”

The Tories have made major gains across the country in the 2021 local elections so far, stealing Hartlepool in a by-election from Labour and ousting the Labour party from councils including Harlow and Nuneaton.
