FOI data reveals 34,000 doses of the Pfizer, Moderna and AstraZeneca vaccines had been thrown away between February and August 2021. At the same time, SNP-led Scottish Government ministers failed to meet their September 12 deadline to vaccine all adults Scots.

The Nats pledged during their first 100 days of their new administration to complete “the vaccination of all adults, subject to supply.”

But only 85.2 percent of Scots or 3,781,425 have had both COVID-19 jabs, the latest data from Public Health Scotland revealed.

Meanwhile, 4,064,981 people have received their first dose of a coronavirus vaccination, which represents 91.6 percent of the adult population.

SNP ministers have also still not met a target set in June by Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon.

Ms Sturgeon told MSPs in June everyone aged 30 to 39 would get the vital second dose of the vaccine by August 20.

But as of yesterday, only 73.4 percent of the age group or 535,738 people had received both doses.

Holyrood critics last night said the Scottish Government should be “ringing” every Scot to ensure they were fully vaccinated.

The UK Government has been widely praised for the way it has handled its vaccine plans but, north of the Border, the speed of the project appears to be slowing.

Alex Cole-Hamilton MSP, Scottish Liberal Democrat leader, said: “This is a dreadful waste when significant numbers of Scots are still unvaccinated and millions of people around the world have no prospect of getting access to a jab.

“The Scottish Government should be ringing every Scot who has not yet had both vaccines, offering them an appointment and setting any concerns they may have at rest.

“That’s the best way out of this crisis.”

Dr Sandesh Gulhane MSP, Scottish Conservative health spokesperson, added: “We know that there will always be a degree of wastage in any vaccination programme.

“It is a shame that these doses have ultimately not ended up in people’s arms, despite the overwhelming success of the scheme across the United Kingdom.

“SNP Ministers should clarify if they are investigating this wastage and what measures are in place to ensure the rollout is as efficient as possible at all times.”

The Scottish Government has been approached for comment.
