The Prime Minister is understood to be planning to outline the criteria he will use to start easing restrictions amend mounting pressure from his backbenchers. Last night he said at a Downing Street coronavirus briefing he was looking at “when and how we want to get things open again”.

The roadmap will spell out the five conditions which must be met in order for the current measures to be reduced. 

They include: a reduction in the number of deaths, hospitalisations decreasing, a rapid fall in the number of cases, the continued successful rollout of the vaccine, and no new variants which could put the UK’s progress at risk. 

A review of the current restrictions is due to take place on February 15, but earlier this week Mr Johnson confirmed he was “looking at the potential of relaxing some measures” before that date.

He said on Monday: “Now this massive achievement has been made of rolling out this vaccination programme, I think people want to see us making sure we don’t throw that away by having a premature relaxation and then another big surge of infection.

“We’re going to be looking at where we’ve got to on February 15.

“We’ll be deciding before then whether we’ll be getting schools back, but daily we’re looking at data and deciding when we’ll be looking to lift restrictions.”
