On Thursday the Health Secretary opened the Northern Centre for Cancer Care, a new £35million centre at the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle. Shortly before he tweeted a photo of himself working, with the caption: “Looking forward to opening one of new 48 hospitals later today.”
However, Ms Rayner replied: “This is a lie. There is not a new hospital.”
Angry Express.co.uk readers have hit back, accusing the Labour deputy of ignoring her party’s health failings while in Government.
One wrote: “You mean like Labour lied about Privatising the NHS and the PFIs that are costing the country millions of pounds off the NHS budget every year?
“And Like Blair Lying about the weapons of mass destruction. Like that you mean?”
Another added: “It does not matter if you call it a treatment centre or a hospital. If it looks like a hospital, acts as a hospital and gives people much needed care and treatment as a hospital does then chances are it’s a hospital.
“As a cancer patient myself I am extremely offended that Rayner is trying to score political points from this.”
A third posted: “Rayner picking on words used.
“Cancer Hospital, Cancer Centre, Cancer care unit, Cancer services, Chemotherapy Unit.
Whatever you chose to call it. It all means good news for the people in the “North of England.
“Rayner showing once again labour’s desperation.”
The Northern Centre for Cancer Care includes radiotherapy machines, a chemotherapy day unit and CT scanner.
It received its first patients last week, with 2,000 patients already booked to receive care at the centre.

Mr Johnson insisted the Government does plan to open 48 new hospitals in October.
Another Express.co.uk reader wrote: “I’m very pleased to hear there’s a new cancer unit. Obviously, Rayner is not.”
A fifth posted: “New hospital, new facility. What’s the difference? The socialists don’t like it because they wrongly believe ‘care’ is their territory.”
The new centre is being run by Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

Mr Javid insisted the “NHS is here for everyone” as he opened the new centre.
Responding to the criticism from Ms Rayner, a spokesperson for the Department of Health and Social Care said: “There are numerous hospitals which specialise in one area of care or that are co-located – they are nonetheless hospitals.
“We have always been clear that the scale and size of each new hospital will vary depending on what is required for each local area.
“In some cases, that will be whole new hospitals on a new site, and in other cases, a new hospital on an existing site with dedicated facilities for particular conditions, such as cancer.”
Mr Javid became Health Secretary in June after his predecessor, Matt Hancock, was forced to resign.
The UK is currently battling the highly infectious Delta coronavirus variant, with everyone in Britain aged over 16 now eligible for a vaccine.
