How to Pay for an Abortion, by State

Abortions are expensive, but state and local funding is available in many areas, and a volunteer manning the hotline will often be able to assist with some monetary support, as well as offer suggestions on other ways to cover the expense if you still can’t quite cover the procedure.

For help paying for your abortion

Some funds can only cover clinics specifically in their area, or only patients in their area, which can make finding help more challenging, and because funding comes from donations, support is often limited and can run out, so be prepared to talk to more than one fund.

For help with travel, lodging, and meals

Need a ride to a clinic, help setting up travel arrangements, a place to stay overnight, or food while you are in town and recovering? These groups are all willing to help if you are in their area. Some are only able to assist in certain regions or with particular clinics, so be sure to check them out before you decide where to make an appointment.

Alabama

Alabama Reproductive Rights Advocates can help with travel to clinics as well as provide funding for services, including abortion, birth control, pregnancy testing, and emergency contraception.

Alabama has a 48-hour, two-appointment waiting period in order to get an abortion. If you need a place to stay overnight in the city, the Montgomery Area Reproductive Justice Coalition at the P.O.W.E.R. House can put you up free of charge. You can email them here for information.

California

Access Women’s Health Justice can connect those in need in California with resources for housing, transportation, and food as well as additional funding for an abortion. Their help line is also bilingual.

Florida

Bread and Roses Women’s Health Center in Gainsville offers additional funds for abortion support and gas reimbursements through its “Ain’t No Shame” fund, which they raise through “Pledge a Protester” fundraisers, T-shirt sales, and community donations.

Georgia

The Magnolia Fund can be contacted for assistance with travel to clinics, lodging, even meals and aftercare prescription costs.

Illinois

Midwest Access Coalition offers travel and lodging support for all clinics in the city of Chicago.

Indiana

All Options Pregnancy Resource Center in Bloomington provides support whether a person choses abortion or to carry to term. As part of their services, the center can refer to abortion providers locally and help with any additional needs you may have in order to access a termination, but they are also available with referrals for adoption, prenatal care, and parenting support if you really want to have a child but are afraid you don’t have the financial means to make it happen. They are a pro-choice, non-judgmental pregnancy center.

Kentucky

Kentucky Support Network offers not just abortion funding but patient transportation as well. Because a new two-visit waiting period has just been signed by the governor, they expect to add lodging assistance in the near future.

New Mexico

If you are ending a pregnancy in Albuquerque, the Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice can arrange lodging, transportation to a clinic, and meals while in town. Contact them here and fill out a questionnaire and they will find a volunteer to help you.

New York

Do you need a two-day procedure because you are further along in your pregnancy? Haven Coalition provides meals, lodgings, and transportation for those traveling into New York City in order to obtain a second-trimester, two-day-long abortion. If you are having a procedure at Parkmed Physicians (212-686-6066), Westside Women’s Medical Pavilion (212-333-5000), or Planned Parenthood NYC (212-965-7000), let the clinic know you need lodging and support, and they will make the arrangements for you.

Oregon

Cascades Abortion Support Collective offers funding, travel support, transportation, and even emotional support like abortion doulas to those who are obtaining a termination in the Portland, Vancouver, and surrounding areas.

The Spring Adams Fund is dedicated to the idea that no one should believe an abortion is out of reach simply because she cannot travel to a clinic. The fund assists abortion patients from Idaho, Oregon, and Southern Washington who are traveling to a Portland, Oregon, clinic. Once you have scheduled an appointment, let the clinic know you need travel assistance, and they will contact the fund on your behalf.
