Barnier’s ‘desperate’ Brexit comments wanting Britain back in the EU mocked
Barnier says ‘door is open’ for UK to rejoin EU
Conservative Brexiteer MPs have mocked former EU negotiator Michel Barnier after he made an apparent appeal for Britain to reverse its decision to Leave.
The 72-year-old failed French Presidential candidate appeared on IT yesterday to say “the door is always open to Britain” to return and he warned that the UK would eventually lose its status as an independent trading nation and have to follow Brussels rules.
But Conservative Brexiteers said that the comments highlighted an increasing desperation among senior people in the EU to have Britain back in the bloc.
Since Brexit it has seen its economy begin to sink with Germany teetering on the edge of a full recession and it has lost its second biggest source of funding.
Former Brexit minister David Jones, who is deputy chairman of the European Research Group (ERG) of Conservative Brexiteer MPs, dismissed Barnier’s intervention.
The MP for Clwyd West said: “Michel Barnier’s comments underline how much the EU is missing the UK and how desperate it is for us to rejoin.
“But the British people made their decision seven years ago. And, frankly, being stuck again in the single market and the customs union is not much of an enticement.
“And what Michel Barnier didn’t mention is that joining members of the EU are required to join the single currency, meaning we would have to give up the pound sterling.
“So, while it’s flattering that Michel wants us back, I’m sure most Brits would rather keep their independence.”
Mr Jones’s view was backed by one of the Tory MPs elected in the former Labour Red Wall on the back of the Brexit vote.

Dudley North MP Marco Longhi has seen first hand some of the UK’s Brexit success as a trade envoy to Brazil where trade has massively grown with Britain, since we left the EU.
He said: “Barnier is delusional. He doesn’t get the British people, he continues to see Brexit as a transaction only.
“A majority of people know that Sovereignty has no price, therefore it cannot be part of any negotiation.
“Of course the EU wants us back: we were always net contributors and had to do the unelected EU Commission’s bidding.
“It’s not going to happen and I will fight against any move in that direction with every ounce of energy and singleminded determination.”

Another senior Brexiteer messaged Express.co.uk saying he did not have anything publishable to say about Barnier with an emoji indicating fury.
But Barnier’s words do indicate that the EU may be getting worried about Britain finding success after Brexit with it about to join a rival trade bloc the Comprehensive and Progressive Trans Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) as well as senior US politicians being supportive of a UK/ US trade deal.
Britain has also avoided having to fork out tens of billions for an EU bailout package following the pandemic and lockdown.
