New York Giants owner says Trump lacks understanding of NFL players’ anthem protests

New York Giants co-owner Steve Tisch says he hopes the NFL has heard the last from President Donald Trump regarding players kneeling during the national anthem.

Tisch, speaking at the premiere of “The Equalizer 2,” told the Hollywood Reporter that he hopes Trump has other things to focus on besides the league and its players this upcoming season.

“Hopefully he’ll have much more going on that he’s going have to deal with and should deal with and must deal with than worrying about what NFL players do,” Tisch said. “He has no understanding of why they take a knee or why they’re protesting. When the new season starts, I hope his priorities are not criticizing the NFL and telling owners what to do and what not to do.”

Giants players will not be punished if they take a knee during the national anthem, Tisch said.

Key Words: Russians did meddle … in the NFL national-anthem controversy

The NFL adopted a policy in May that would fine teams whose personnel aren’t respecting the flag during the national anthem. Trump supported the decision from the NFL initially, but backtracked earlier this month, saying it was “worse” than the old policy. The NFL put a “standstill” on that policy Thursday so it could re-evaluate.

Tisch is the latest owner to criticize Trump after the president unleashed a firestorm on the NFL over players protesting during the national anthem. New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft and Philadelphia Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie were among those criticizing the president in a closed-door meeting last October, according to the New York Times.

National-anthem protests surrounding the NFL initially began during the 2016 season, when then–San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick started kneeling during the song as part of a protest against police brutality. The hotly contested move, and other protest variations, were later adopted by other players.

“The Equalizer 2” is a new movie starring Denzel Washington. Tisch is one of the film’s producers.
