Poundworld announces 40 more closures at a loss of 531 jobs
High street chain Poundworld is to axe a further 40 stores at a loss of hundreds more jobs.
On Tuesday afternoon, administrators Deloitte said 531 workers have been informed of redundancy – with all stores earmarked set to shut on Tuesday 24 July 2018.
The announcement follows 25 closures so far – which included 242 job losses earlier this month.
Last week, bosses also revealed 80 more are to close affecting 1,024 workers.
These branches are set to shut by 22 July – you can view the list of stores affected, here.
Today, the number soared to 145 stores UK wide – affecting many small, regional high streets.
It comes on top of 100 head office redundancies which came to light just weeks after the firm announced it was seeking a buyer in June.
Despite the changes – and Poundworld launching its ‘closing down sale’ – bosses claim it’s not the end for the retailer. Deloitte – which is managing the firm during its difficult period said efforts to find a buyer are still at ‘development’ stage.
Clare Boardman, joint administrator, said: "We would like to thank all the employees for their continued support and commitment during this difficult time. We are keeping staff appraised of developments as they happen."
Clare Boardman and Daniel Butters, restructuring partners at Deloitte, were appointed as joint administrators to the Company on 11 June 2018.
At the time of appointment, the business operated from 335 stores and employed circa 5,100 people.
