Mike Francesa rips Mets GM Brodie Van Wagenen during interview: ‘You’ve done a lousy job’
WFAN radio host Mike Francesa laid into into Mets general manager Brodie Van Wagenen during an on-air interview Friday, telling the executive that he's done a "lousy job" inhis first year with the organization.
The Mets were 40-51 entering Saturday, 14.5 games behind the NL East-leading Braves and it looks they'll be sellers as the trade deadline approaches.
As Van Wagenen tried to explain his philosophy for the Mets, Francesa, the legendary New York sports talk host, cut him off:
“Your fan base doesn’t trust you because you promised them a winner this year and you’ve been terrible," Francesa said. "They think that you’ve done a lousy job – and you have done a lousy job for the first half – but you know what, it’s only half a season so let’s see where you go from here.
"Right now they’re not going to believe what you say. You know that. You thought you were going to have a winning team and right now you’re the second-worst team in the league. They were expecting a lot better this year."

Van Wagenen, an agent-turned-GM, was boisterous in the offseason, telling the Mets' division rivals to "come get us."
New York's blockbuster trade with the Mariners for Robinson Cano and Edwin Diaz has been a disaster so far and tensions have run high to the point that Van Wagenen threw a chair during a meeting with manager Mickey Callaway.
Van Wagenen responded to Francesa quickly before the interview came to an end: “(The fans) were (expecting a lot better) and so were we and we feel their pain and we’re not gonna quit on them."
