KFC is launching a vegan chicken burger – and here’s what it tastes like

For too long, vegans have been denied the epic taste of KFC ’s iconic Original Recipe. But now a bold new era is upon us, as KFC have confirmed that they will soon be launching their first ever vegan burger.

The famous fried chicken brand have finally taken the unprecedented step of releasing a fully vegan chicken burger – complete with the brand's iconic Original Recipe crispy coating.

Instead of their customary chicken, the fillet is instead replaced with a bespoke Quorn fillet, coated in the Colonel’s Original Recipe herbs and spices, plus lettuce and vegan mayo, all housed in a soft glazed bun.

Dubbed the Imposter burger, KFC's new addition gets its name from the idea that it replicates the brand's classic Original Recipe burger, but without any animal products, with KFC calling it "triumph of deception".

The Quorn fillet also marks the first time ever that the secret recipe crispy coating has been used on anything other than chicken.

Sadly, the game-changing new burger won't be as widely available as the rest of KFC's wares, with the fast food chain choosing to trial it at first for four weeks in selected restaurants in London, Bristol and the Midlands.

As well as the new vegan OG, another new (but this time vegetarian) creation is also being trialled from 15th July in the same locations, called the Southern Fritter Stacker, which will come as either a burger, wrap or ricebox.

Victoria Robertson, Chief Vegetable Enthusiast at KFC UK & Ireland commented: “We know… it’s unfair. Vegans have been cruelly denied the incredible taste of KFC up to now, which is why we’ve worked hard to perfect The Imposter – a vegan burger that the Colonel would be proud of.”

Tony Davison, Head of Global Foodservice & QSR at Quorn commented: “A vegan KFC? We couldn’t believe it either. But we’ve done it – working with KFC we’ve created a bespoke Quorn fillet that does the Colonel’s recipe justice. We have no doubt that KFC fans are going to love the modern take on a finger lickin’ favourite.”

Dawn Carr, Director of Vegan Corporate Projects at PETA added: "We’ve been so excited to hear about this and play a part in KFC’s journey to reaching this game-changing new vegan range. We're confident it will be a huge hit with the skyrocketing numbers of vegans, vegetarians, and flexitarians around the UK. Clucking marvellous!"
